Maple Violins was founded in 2020, in the midst of the global pandemic, offering musicians a way to continue to engage in the stringed instrument market through a secure online buying and selling process. Some of the principles of that approach remain. Sellers can continue to enjoy their instrument until a buyer shows an interest, usually realising more in the purchase than immediate part exchange options and avoiding lengthy periods where their instrument remains unsold with a retailer. Buyers continue to have the security of a two week trial before committing to any purchase. The main difference now is the enjoyment of meeting many of you in person and exploring the right options together. We remain extremely well set up and insured for any shipping requirements.
Our director, Tom Palmer, spent a decade working in the major musical instrument auction houses, including a role of specialist at Bonhams auctioneers before taking on a director’s role at the renowned Brompton’s Auctioneers with whom we have maintained a close association. Following a second kidney transplant in 2022, Tom has committed to a research project focussing on the Betts family and their many talented makers – a golden era in English violin making. Following a series of lectures on the subject, we look forward to publishing this in stages over the coming months and would be delighted too offer our advice on any instruments of that school. Of particular interest are instruments labelled or stamped Betts along with some of their most noted associates including the Panormos, the Fendt’s, Henry Lockey Hill, Richard Tobin, the Dodd bow makers and any of the Furbers, regardless of whether you are interested in selling or a valuation.
